1) Fantastic Four: Books of Doom

Brubaker, Ed. Penciler, Pablo Raimondi. Fantastic Four: Books of Doom Marvel Publishing Inc., 2007 ISBN 0-7851-1704-0

Summary

Go deep into the mind and life of Dr. Doom, one of Fantastic Four’s arch nemeses. Before he became Dr. Doom he was Victor Von Doom, a member of the Von Doom Gypsy Clan in Latveria. After his mothers and fathers tragic deaths, Victor became consumed with evil and wanted nothing more than his mothers “cold” hands embracing him, as she did when he was a child. His life work became consumed in creating an alternative universe but along the way the government wanted his mind to create machines of death. An accident causes Victor Von Doom to become Dr. Doom, one of the most evil and intelligent men, who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. After his accident, he escapes from the grips of the government, to Latveria where he would change his life and the life of others, encompassing all evil.

Critical evaluation

Ed Brubaker explores the evil mind of Dr. Doom that leaves the reader knowing who Dr. Doom was and who he is now, a villain. This background story gives a clear understanding of who Dr. Doom was and why he became the “man” he is today. The story is told from the point of the view of the villain, Dr. Doom, rather than the protagonist which is the story that everyone knows. Pablo Raimondi art captures the light and darkness of Dr. Doom, from his childhood to his descent into evil as King of Latveria. The art is dark and well drawn, and his layouts are easy to follow. Brubaker and Raimondi adaptation of Dr. Doom captures his original story well and introduces a twist at the end.

Readers annotation

Victor Von Doom was an ordinary young boy whose tragic events lead him to become the feared, Dr. Doom. A dark examination of the mind of Dr. Doom told from his point of view.

2) Joker

Azzarello, Brian. Artist, Lee Bermejo. Joker DC Comics, 2008 ISBN 978-1-4012-1581-1

Summary

Told from the perspective of Jonny Frost, a low level thug who is sent to Arkham Asylum to pick up the Joker. Frost becomes part of the Joker's gang and begins to assists him in trying to regain his former status as a high profile gang figure within Gotham City. By gaining notoriety again he clashes with notorious figures, such as, Two-face, Killer Croc, The Penguin and Batman. Jonny aids and abides the Joker in numerous crimes, including multiple murders. Jonny goes from petty crime to underworld notoriety he has always sought. Although he is afraid of the Joker he respects and idolizes him. Jonny begins to look at Joker differently once he begins to act in ways that Jonny does not find to be a ‘joking’ manner.

Critical evaluation

Joker is a deeply disturbing and completely unsettling work, a literary achievement that is a successful attempt to scratching beneath the surface of the Joker's unfathomable psyche. It is a hellish decent into the insides of the most foul and guilty city that is known as Gotham City, with its most unworthy of living citizens. Its straightforward plot and onslaught of extremely graphic violence, Azzarello and Bermejo's story somehow manages to achieve a level of delicacy rare to any Batman comic, let alone one that goes into one of the most ludicrous and sick minds graphic novels have ever known. Bermejo and Azzarello create a Joker that is a masterpiece of chaos, gore, grit, guts, and unimaginable insanity.

3) Batman: The Killing Joke

Moore, Alan. Illus. Brian Boland. Batman: The Killing Joke DC Comics, 1988 ISBN 0-930289-45-5

Summary

A psychological battle between Batman and his arch nemesis the Joker ensues after Jokers escapes from Arkham Asylum. The Joker intends to drive Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordon insane to prove that the most honorable citizen is capable of going mad after having "one bad day". In one day, through many unfortunate events, causes Joker who was once average becomes insane. Once in Gotham City Joker kidnaps Gordon and imprisons him in an unoccupied amusement park, where he makes him look at his shot, paralyzed, and naked daughter in many different photographs. Batman reaches Gordon but the battle between the Joker and Batman begins.

Critical evaluation

The graphics and great story line create dark mood and a twisted theory that causes the Joker to become, the Joker. The graphic novel is filled with perfect transitions, allowing the story to easily flow between present and past as the Joker attempts to force insanity on Commissioner Gordon. Bolland's art does not repeat itself in the novel; it gives vivid depictions of the characters involved, almost natural. All faces show full expression, showing every muscle and wrinkle. Together Moore's rhythmic dialogue and Bolland's unrefined art create a unique story that captures the insanity and vulnerability of the Joker.

Readers annotation

Joker tries to prove his theory that a sane man can become crazy in one day by kidnapping one of Gothams honest men, Commissioner Gordon. Gordon must view picture of his helpless daughter in pain that will cause any ordinary man to become insane.

Critical evaluation

Union Jack is the new and modern Captain Britain that will keep London safe and secure from those that wish to harm the innocent. He will stop at nothing to keep freedom and justice in his country, even if it means that he will bring those higher than him under scrutiny. There are many cameos of other Marvel characters into the plot line. Christos gives a comic book adaptation of terrorist events that are related to the real world. The super villain terrorists are no match for the superhero, Union Jack and his band of allies. Union Jack has no special powers but uses in wit and agile abilities to his advantage. 7) Batman: Year One

Miller, Frank. Illus. David Mazzucchelli. Batman: Year One DC Comics, 2005 ISBN 1-4012-0752-9

Summary

Intimate look on how Bruce Wayne became Batman and his relationship with Lieutenant Gordon. Before they became a duet they were individuals who wanted Gotham City to be clean of all the criminals. Gotham city is at its low with corrupted politicians, criminals lurking out of all corners, and prostitutes. Gotham is a typical Sin City that needs a hero. Gordon is out there fighting crime on his own while Bruce is discovering his role in the city that took his parents life. Batman is coming out protecting people, some politicians and police find him a threat while Gordon thinks that he is doing good but wants to know who the man behind the mask is. Underlying story, is of Catwomans appearance into the story line.

Critical evaluation

Great prose and old school style graphics create a Batman that would be loved by all generations. It is seen more from the point of view of Lieutenant Gordon rather than Batman it gives a more depth analysis of a strong relationship that keeps Gotham City afloat. Miller writes more thought dialogue rather than conversational thus creating a more of a connection between the two main characters. Both Wayne and Gordon have the same values and thoughts of Gotham City and are willing to put an effort to save it. Year One, gives details to Gotham City, Lieutenant Gordon, and Batman’s true colors with vivid graphics. Both want to help the city but need each other to keep from falling apart, neither could do it alone. Mazzuccheilli artwork captures the grittiness that is Gotham City. Some illustrations are black and white while others have some color but there is darkness to every illustration. The graphic novel gives a great background of the many Batman’s that follow.

Moore, Alan and David Lloyd. Artist, David Lloyd and Siobhan Dodd. V for Vendetta DC Comics, 1988. ISBN 0-9302-8952-8

Summary

A fascist and dystopian futuristic United Kingdom set in the 1990s after a nuclear war, that has left much of the world destroyed. “V” the masked vigilant anarchist is the only one working to destroying the totalitarian government through elaborative destructive events. "V" rescues a Evey Hammond, from the “Fingermen” who intend to rape her after arresting her for prostitution. After rescuing Evey he detonates a bomb inside the abandoned Palace of Westminster. V takes Evey to his secret lair, which he calls "The Shadow Gallery". Evey tells V her life story, describing her life after the nuclear war of the late 1980s. After the bombing the government is keeping a closer eye on the country. V continues his course of destruction by blowing up buildings and taking down those in high rankings, from bottom to top. The government is becoming more aggressive and V as well as Evey must be careful, before Fate notices.

Critical evaluation Moore and Lloyd create a terrifying portrait of totalitarianism and resistance, with its prose and illustrations. It captures the depth of both main characters as well as the society that it is in. V description is of a broken man who has had everything dear to him stripped away by the government. Evey portrays an ignorant young woman who lives life carelessly without taking a moment to think about the society and life she lives in. The illustrations capture the rigid life that totalitarianism is with its bold and straight lines.

Moore, Alan, Artist, Dave Gibbons. Watchmen DC Comics, Inc, 1986 ISBN 0-9302-8923-4

Summary

Edward Bloak, was once a superhero named The Comedian, who was employed by the US government. Rorschach believes that he has discovered a plot to terminate superheroes and begins to warn his old superhero friends, Dan Dreiberg, Nite Owl, Doctor Manhattan, Laurie Juspeczyk, Silk Spectre, and Adrian Veidt, Ozymandias. With the rise of nuclear war becoming more of an issue between Russia and the US, superheroes are needed. Earth is left to battle on its own while the rest of the superheroes are paranoid for there lives. Earth and superheroes are in danger and there is little hope left for humanity.

Critical evaluation

It is not the ordinary superhero book because it does not have all the same elements as one. There is only one character that has superhero capabilities, Doctor Manhattan, who received his after a freak accident in a lab, which is the story for most characters. Besides him, most of the other characters have gadgets and wear costumes that create there powers. It is a great story line because it creates an alternative universe then our own but it incorporates elements from it. For instance, it shows JFK’s death but it was done by a superhero or Nixon never resigned but was reelected three times! Its illustrations are well done and very detailed. Gibbons and Moore create a novel that captures the reader with its brilliant graphics and excellent story line.

Christos. Penciler, Jeremy Haun. Civil War: Iron Man Marvel Publishing Inc., 2007 ISBN 0-7851-2314-8

Summary

Two Story lines- Rubicon- the fight against Captain America and Iron man. Captain America and Iron Man were once close friends. Captain America taught Iron Man to fight and became his predecessor but after an altercation the two became detached. A fight ensues between the two that will change there friendship forever. In the Invincible, Iron man is gung ho for the new law that makes those with powers to register themselves but there are many who do not agree with it. They feel that they are placing themselves out there in the public’s eye which would be dangerous to them. A fight begins with many marvel comic superheroes against Iron Man and his strong beliefs.

Critical evaluation

Both story lines are a great contribution to the civil war series. The civil war between Iron Man and Captain America, has great prose and illustration. While Iron Man is fighting Captain America there are clips of them training together. This is a great contrast from one another, in one they are friends while in the other they are enemies. In Invincible, Iron Man has to fight other heroes when they strongly disagree with the law. Iron Man is shown as an ignorant character who does not want to challenge authority. Civil War goes into detail about the internal conflicts that are Iron Man.

Yost, Christopher. Penciler: Paco Diaz Luque. X-Men: Emperor Vulcan, Marvel Publishing Inc., 2008 ISBN 978-0-7851-2551-8

Summary

Gabriel and Alex Summers are brothers who are fighting against each other for the fate of billions in the Shi’Ar. Gabriel is Vulcan the Shi’ar emperor while Alex is Havok who is leading the rebellious Starjammers against his brothers rule. While there is internal turmoil from the brothers as well as in there world there is an outside force who is willing to destroy both of them. A new power emerges, known as the Scy'ar Tal, a race of aliens who were driven from their home world by the Shi'ar centuries earlier, and are now seeking revenge. Havok along with his band of Starjammers are forces to join forces with Vulcan to fight the war against the enemies. Throughout the fight, Havok is aware that his brother might turn on him so is always waiting to see when his brother will betray him.

Critical evaluation

In order to really understand this graphic novel the reader must read the collection of comics before this. The book does not give a lot of background information on Vulcan or Havok beginnings of internal conflicts. Besides the lack of character development the plot of the story is well done. Two brothers joining together to fight against a common enemy but one is still waiting for the other to attack. The Scy’ar Tal secret is the most interesting part of the story because it makes way for the other story to continue. It is not your ordinary X-Men tale because it takes place in a different planet but none the less it still holds vital characters of the X-Men series.

When the boy speaks, Superman is shocked to find out the boy is speaking Kryptonese. Meanwhile, in the planet Krypton, three prisoners have escaped from the Phantom Zone, Non, Ursa, and Jor-E (General Zod). These three criminals were banishes for crimes of treason never to be released again. General Zod and Ursa are looking for there child, Christopher and will stop at nothing to get him back. A battle ensues between those from the Phantom Zone and those of the Justice League. Superman must try to save Metropolis and Christopher at the same time.

Critical evaluation

The plot line as well as the illustrations are clever and unique in the Superman genre. The best thing about the graphic novel are the 3-D glasses that come with it. When Superman is in the Phantom Zone, the pages are in 3-D so the reader is experiencing it the same way the protagonist is. The graphics follow great with the story line, when there is no evil present the colors are bright but when there is it becomes darker. Johns gives an in depth analysis of the reason why the three main evil characters were sent to imprisonment and why Christopher was an innocent who was still locked up. He also gives a clue that Superman and Lois both want a child…maybe in the future.

Readers annotation

Superman realizes that he is not the last son of Krypton and grows fond of the boy, Christopher, but his evil parents would stop at nothing to gain him back. 13) Batman: Snow

Johnson, Dan Curtis and J.H. Williams III. Artist, Seth Fisher. Batman: Snow DC Comics, 2007 ISBN 1-4012-1265-4

Summary

Batman needs help on an investigation so he rounds up Gotham City citizens that will help him find what he is looking for. Victor, a doctor, discovers that his wife has a tumor and is willing to try anything to stop it. He takes his wife from the hospital and brings her over to his lab where he tries to save her life but ends up killing her in a freak accident that caused her body to freeze. Guilt stricken Victor begin to see his wife and listens to her demands of vengeance. Victor tries to take his own life but instead is given special powers that he uses to wreak his vengeance.

Critical evaluation

Gives great in depth detail of the man comics have come to known as Mr. Freeze but the style in doing so is boring. It does a very good job of Victors development character of switching from the loving husband to the killing machine, Mr. Freeze. It also allows Batman to reach out to the community for help rather than relying on himself and Commissioner Gordon all the time. The graphics are not very dimensional and the prose have no unique style to them. There are many other authors and illustrators in the genre that will give it a much better rendition.

He is now meant to protect earth and the galazy from every threat imaginable, armed with a specially crafted power ring that turns his determination into reality. Hal has been framed for murder and is a fugitive on the run from a legion of intergalactic bounty hunters and the new Global Guardians. He must clear his name and discover who put a price on his head as well as the reason why.

Critical evaluation

A classic fantastic super-hero graphic novel that is action packed with fighting scenes throughout its pages. It is easy to read and follow because its very detailed graphics and prose that will have those who have no idea of the Green Lantern understanding it. The Green Lantern’s powers are explained thoroughly and the background of Hal Jordan is explained well. The plot line is also brilliant because it take an ordinary young man who is given super powers because ‘the ring’ wanted him. He must fight off the old Green Lantern as well as those who followed him, which is a great storyline of “guilty until proven innocent.” Most superheroes are given there powers without a fight but Hal must fight to make is presence known.

Readers annotation

15) Superman: Red Son

Millar, Mark. Artist, Dave Johnson. Superman: Red Son. DC Comics, 2004 ISBN 1-4012-0191-1

Summary

Superman landed in Soviet Russia and becomes one with the communist cause against the Americans. Lex Luthor is his American arch nemesis who is married to Lewis. Superman will do anything to fight for the cause of the communist even taking over the country. Lex Luthor find traces of Superman DNA that he found on Sputnik after the crash in Metropolis which he uses to create a Bizarro clone of superman. Russia accidently launches a missle at the U.S. that Bizzaro stops but is the cause of his death which causes more tension between the countries. The US is willing to do anything to bring Russia down while Superman cares more about creating utopia in Russia.

Critical evaluation

A great adaptation of the ordinary American Boy Wonder story actually fighting for the ‘Reds.’ This plot and illustrations are a masterpiece that leave the reader flabbergasted at the end of the tail. It take everything conventional that Superman possess and creates an alternative universe with no loopholes, everything is explained and answered. It goes into the mind of Superman as a communist and the mind of Lex Luthor an American hero. Superman is no longer fighting against the communist as he did once before but is now fighting against the US. It also gives a different idea of what would have been. In the graphic novel, Superman spends money in fixing Russia from the inside instead of wasting money on weapons of mass destruction. Millar and Johnson give a great analysis of the different world it would have been if Superman landed somewhere else.

Readers annotation

Superman lands in Russia and begins to create an utopian society by eliminating poverty and giving to those less fortunate. While Lex Luthor, in America, is working on a device that will leave Russia diminished.
